The Price of Freedom

He was pierced for our transgressions.  He was bruised for our iniquities, and by His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5 I could hardly believe what just happened as I hiked up the steep incline on Table Mountain with my walking poles.  As I hoisted myself up the next large step, I heard the sound of one of my poles piercing a hole through the silk that was hanging over my shoulder….the silk that represented the lives of women trapped in abuse, exploitation, and slavery.  I had just taken the silk out of my backpack and tied it around my shoulder to have as a tangible reminder that I’m doing this for them and prophetically “carrying” them to freedom.  So, how could God let “them” be pierced and have more damage done to them?   I immediately started asking the Lord what He was saying and felt him show me that even when you’re stepping out in courage to pursue freedom, you will still suffer pain.  The price for freedom is high.  There is a cost, but it is worth it. I felt Him remind me that just as in childbirth, there is blood and much pain involved in the process, but the outcome is LIFE.  In the same way, the journey to freedom in Christ will be filled with pain, and some of the time it will be by the hand of God himself.  Some might argue that God would never allow that kind of suffering to happen, but I beg to differ.  Isaiah 53:10 says that it was God’s will to crush his son and to cause him to suffer.   And in John 11, Jesus spoke of Lazarus’ death as not being unto death, but unto the glory of God and unto life.”  Satan’s purpose and plan in pain is death, but God’s purpose and plan in pain is LIFE. Jesus was pierced for our transgressions, and in the eyes of the world the cross looked like total death and defeat.  But, the pain and suffering of the cross was not unto death, but unto life….resurrection life.  The greatest suffering turned out to be the greatest victory.  The same is true of our lives.  We will suffer pain, betrayal, and sorrow even as we walk with God and pursue freedom, healing, and wholeness.  But, in His hand he can/will turn our greatest sufferings and pain into our greatest...
